He obtained his Bachelor of Science (Honors) degree in Cell and Molecular Biology (Genetics) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Bangi Selangor in 1997. He pursued his post-graduate study at the same university and received his Doctoral degree in 2001. After spending one year as post-doctoral researcher at UKM, he joined Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Kolej Universiti Sains dan Teknologi Malaysia (KUSTEM) in July 2003 as a lecturer. Currently, he is the Associate Professor at Institute of Marine Biotechnology (IMB), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.
